Hospice is a support service that is ordered by a physician to help with the care of a terminally ill individual. Its focus is not on cure, but to keep the patient comfortable and as free from pain as possible. Hospice support includes visits by nurses several times a week as well as visits by nurse’s aides to help with bathing and shaving. The services of a social worker are available to connect the family to local resources and to help with any family conflict or discord. A chaplain is also available to assist the patient and family with spiritual concerns that often arise in the context of a terminal diagnosis.
Hospice services are for patients that have decided to let nature take its course and to focus on quality of life, rather than quantity of life. These comfort care services, as well as medicines and equipment related to the terminal condition, are fully covered by Medicare. Under current Medicare regulations, in order to receive hospice support a patient must forego all curative treatments. For more information about this and other types of care available, see our article about Getting Help.
