Support Groups-Bereavement

 
 
 

 
 

Meeting with others who are in the same situation offers a unique opportunity to share feelings and gain valuable tips. Some groups meet for a set number of weeks, others are drop-in. Check for daytime and evening offerings. As a rule, support groups are offered free of charge, however you should call ahead to find out the particulars.

A Look at Grief

Look at grief is divided into two sessions. One class is to help adults understand childhood grief and the second is understanding adolescent grief. The classes include the major factors that influence child adolescent response to the death of a loved one, potential inhibitors of the expression of grief, and the adult's obstacles to communicate with children.

Adult Grief Class

This 5-week class is offered to adults who have experienced the death of a loved one. Classes are open to anyone in the community.

Bereaved Parents Support Group

Support group offered to parents who have experienced a death of a child. Contact Saint Francis Medical Center Hospice for other details.

Compassionate Friends

Compassionate Friends is a national nonprofit, self-help support organization with local chapters, offering friendship and understanding to bereaved parents, grandparents and siblings. There is no religious affiliation and there are no membership dues or fees. The group is run by "seasoned grievers" who reach out to the newly bereaved. National website includes link to chat room and online brochure for siblings, as well as the ability to find out current contact information for the chapter leader in our county (rotates).

Getting Through the Holidays

Support for those who have lost a loved one as the holiday season approaches.

GriefNet.org
A national website with over 47 facilitated e-mail support groups covering topics such as loss of a parent, loss of a spouse/partner, loss of sibling or friend, spiritual aspects of loss, etc. Each topic has subtopics, such as young widowed, widowed with children, grief moving on…Enjoy the flexibility of 24 hour a day, 7 day a week access. Some people often find the anonymity of an internet support group more healing.

Inside Talk

Children are often referred to as the forgotten mourners. They grieve but are not given the opportunity to express their feelings. Inside Talk provides bereaved children the freedom to express grief in a safe environment without fear of judgement, isolation or abandonment. "Inside Talk" provides a variety of ways to assist the child in the expression of his/her grief.
