Adult foster homes are generally run by a homeowner who takes in four to six boarders and provides meals and light assistance. Residents can have a single or double room and dine together family style. As a general rule, adult foster homes do not hire licensed personnel. They are appropriate for individuals who are fairly self sufficient, although some are willing to board persons with more serious conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease or even terminal illness.
The costs of an adult foster home are not covered by Medicare. For more information about this and other types of care available, see our article about Getting Help.
