Skilled nursing facilities, also known as nursing homes, provide 24-hour-a-day access to the services of licensed medical personnel—nurses, nurse’s aides, and a physician on call if needed. Patients may stay for a few days or for weeks, months, or years. Medicare will often pay for short stays but not for long-term residence.
